Revolutionizing Water Filtration with Paper

How does sustainable innovation and technology save lives?

The instances are abundant but for now, we'll focus on one example.

According to UN-Water, 783 million people do not have access to clean water and almost 2.5 billion do not have access to adequate sanitation. This poses a tremendous risk to many undeveloped communities as dirty water is to blame for many fatal diseases.

A new powerful filtration system has been developed to combat these issues, but it may not be what you expect.

Dirty water can now be purified with the help of a book (no reading necessary). The pages of the "Drinkable book" created by a collaborative team of engineers and scientist, have properties which eliminate the life-threatening bacteria in water and make it safe to drink.

The "magic" lies in the silver nano particle technology applied to each page, which has the potential to filter up to 100 litres of water!

Aside from serving as water filters, the pages of the book also provide important sanitary information for inhabitants of areas with water and sanitations issues.

Fast forward to min 1:04 for detailed instructions on how to use the filters.

The Drinkable book is a great example of innovation that utilizes resources cleverly, in that it doesn't waste materials but rather it seeks to provide a purpose for them. This has given them a competitive advantage and allowed them to provide a lightweight and inexpensive solution to many areas in need.
